ASSDA Webinar: Stainless steel - Environmental, sustainable and life cycle cost advantages
Corrosion resistance and "bright and shiny" are often the first things that spring to mind when people are asked about stainless steel. Certainly, its durability and unchanging appearance are important advantages of using stainless steel. However, minimal leaching, no requirement for the solvents used in coatings, low lifetime CO2 produced and energy used in manufacture, lower maintenance compared to other materials and ease of repurposing stainless components are amongst the environmental positives.
Sustainability has its own language relating to CO2 production and reuse, and this webinar will use case studies to detail the links between environmental and sustainable factors for stainless steel.
The third arm of the advantages is the well-known life cycle costing advantage which arises directly from durability. This will be explored using case studies on street furniture, stainless reinforcement in concrete, green shading and some stainless steel substitutions.
Finally, some examples of the decorative possibilities, heritage applications and resistance to earthquakes (an ultimate in environmental resistance?) will be considered.
