About the webinar:
All stainless steels have a high resistance to corrosion. Stainless steels work by preventing the initiation of corrosion and, except in very severe chemical environments, do not corrode by uniform general loss. Therefore, the carbon steel mindset that corrosion is inevitable without surface protection and that "thicker is better" cannot be applied. Instead, stainless steels rely on design and attention to surface finish and condition.
If the environment is unexpectedly aggressive, there are several forms of localised attack that can occur. These include:
- Crevice and pitting attack;
- Stress corrosion cracking in hot water;
- Intergranular loss;
- Attack associated with microbial activity, or;
- The pseudo-general processes such as galvanic corrosion and stray current losses.
This webinar looks at these corrosion types including examples and how to avoid attack without using more highly alloyed materials (as it is generally not the best approach).
The design of stainless steels for chemical processing uses iso-corrosion curves on a temperature vs. concentration graph, and this, along with the good or bad effects of impurities, will be covered.
