Webinar outline

Join us for an in-depth look at duplex stainless steels and discover why these high-performance alloys continue to gain popularity across demanding industries.

This webinar will explore:

  • The evolution of duplex stainless steels and the innovations that shaped modern grades
  • The duplex family of alloys and their key properties
  • How duplex stainless steels compare with austenitic grades
  • Why duplex alloys excel in challenging environments, particularly where stress corrosion cracking is a concern
  • Real-world applications in the oil and gas, mineral processing, and desalination industries
  • Case studies highlighting both successful applications and common pitfalls
  • The critical role of quality assurance and quality control in preventing premature failures
  • How ISO 17781 supports best practice in the use and fabrication of duplex stainless steels

Whether you are involved in design, specification, fabrication or asset management, this webinar will provide valuable insights into selecting and using duplex stainless steels effectively.

Attendees are encouraged to submit specific cases in advance or bring them up during the Q&A session (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Presenter: Dr Roger Francis, ASSDA Technical Consultant

Dr. Francis has over 50 years of experience as a corrosion engineer, specialising in marine corrosion, desalination, sour oil and gas corrosion, mineral processing, and the chemical and process industries.

Publications & research: Authored over 100 technical papers, with a focus on copper alloys and duplex stainless steels. Dr Francis has written seven books on corrosion and co-edited three others, including a recent book on corrosion in desalination plants.

Leadership & recognition: Served as Chair of NACE Europe, twice as NACE European Area Director, and as Chair of NACE STG 32 (Oil and Gas; metals). Named a NACE Fellow (2005) for contributions to marine corrosion. Recipient of the J. Hull Award (2014) for publications and the Paul McIntyre Award (2023) from ICorr for work in corrosion standards and education.

Current work: Established his own corrosion consultancy, RFMaterials, in 2012.
